How to authenticate your site with Yahoo!

If you followed the instructions on how to get indexed by Yahoo!, and checked if the site was listed, then you successfully submitted your site. But it does not stop there, you still need to authenticate your site with Yahoo to see what pages got indexed by Yahoo. If your site was not yet indexed by Yahoo!, you just wait, eventually Yahoo! will crawl and index your site.

Anyway, when I wrote the blog entry, How to Get Indexed by Yahoo!, last Tuesday, after submitting the site, you were supposed to be redirected to the page like the one in number 4.

But today, when I tested it, instead of that thank you page you will be redirected to another page, to the Authentication page right away. Yahoo! probably changed it so that you will not forget to authenticate the site. Perhaps, some really just submit the site and do not authenticate it.

Let me start again from the very beginning.

1. Login to your Yahoo! account.
URL: https://login.yahoo.com/

2. Then go to Site Explorer – My Sites page.
URL: https://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/mysites

. Upload the verification file to your site.

Please upload the key file that you downloaded, or created yourself, at the root level of your site directory. The expected file path is
https://www.sehdi.com/y_key_ea2a9d1c73744911.html.

. When the file is uploaded, please click the button below to let us know that the authentication key is in place. We will authenticate your site within 24 hours.

The text file and the meta key will be different. Yahoo! will automatically create those for you.

How to Get Indexed by Yahoo!

I already wrote about how to get indexed by Yahoo! on another blog. I just thought that since this site and its blog is about web design and web designing extends to search engine optimization, to getting a site or blog crawled and indexed by the search engines, I decided to write about how to get indexed by Yahoo! on this blog.

I also have written about how to get indexed by Google and how to get indexed by Bing at ProBlogit.com. I will write again regarding those two topics later on here at Sehdi.com after I finished writing about how to get indexed by Yahoo!.

So, how are we going to get Yahoo! indexed our blog or site?

Simple, by submitting the blog or site to Yahoo! search.

First of all, submitting a site or blog to Yahoo! requires registration. Make sure that you already have an account with Yahoo!

If you do not have an account with Yahoo!, sign up for a Yahoo! account first at
https://na.edit.yahoo.com/registration.

If you already have an account with Yahoo!, login to your account first so the submission will be easier than what I posted at ProBlogit.com on how to get indexed by Yahoo!.

I wrote there that you can submit a site to Yahoo! even if you are not logged in. But then you will still be redirected to sign in to Yahoo after you submitted a site for inclusion in Yahoo! search.

If you already have an account with Yahoo!, let us proceed:

1. Login to your Yahoo! account.
URL: https://login.yahoo.com/

2. Then go to Site Explorer – My Sites page.
URL: https://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/mysites

How to Get Indexed by Yahoo!

3. Submit your site for free.

Fill out the one line form provided near the button “Add My Site” situated on the right side.

How to Get Indexed by Yahoo!

4. Then click “Add My Site” button.

After you submitted the site, you will be redirected to the page shown below.

How to Get Indexed by Yahoo!

It says:

Thank you! Your URL has been added to our list of URLs to crawl. Please expect a delay of several weeks before your URL is crawled.

Note that in the effort to maximize the quality of search results that appear on Yahoo! and our other distribution partners, we do not add every submitted URL to our search index. Therefore we cannot make predictions or guarantees about whether your URL will appear as a search result.

That’s it. That is how simple it is to submit your site for inclusion in Yahoo! search.

To make sure that your site was really added, click “My Sites” at the sidebar on the left.

If the site is listed, then everything is fine.

If you do not see the site, fill out the one line form provided like in #3, then click “Add My Site” button.

That’s it.

Your site may need to be authenticated, so follow the instructions to authenticate your site.

On the other hand, my next topic on this blog will be on how to authenticate your site with Yahoo!.

If you cannot wait, then proceed and authenticate your site with Yahoo!.

Bear in mind though that Yahoo! will crawl and index your site whenever it wants. So there is no guarantee that your site or blog will be crawled and indexed or be included soon enough in Yahoo! search. But this is the process or method on how to get indexed by Yahoo! fast.

Before I end this, let me show you another way of submitting a site to Yahoo!.

1. Login to your Yahoo! account.
URL: https://login.yahoo.com/

2. Then go to Site Explorer – Submit.
URL: http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/submit

How to Get Indexed by Yahoo!

3. You have two options:

Submit a Website or Webpage
Submit Site Feed

To submit a Website or Webpage, click the link and the page will be like the image below.

How to Get Indexed by Yahoo!

To submit a Site Feed, click the link and the page will be like the image below.

How to Get Indexed by Yahoo!

4. Submit your site for free.

Fill out the one line form provided near the button “Submit URL” or “Submit Feed” situated on the right side.

5. Then click “Submit URL” or “Submit Feed” button.

That’s it.

Google, Yahoo! and Bing updated SERPs regarding GeoCities pages

Google, Yahoo! and Bing search engines updated its search engine results pages (SERPs) regarding GeoCities homepages.

Yesterday, when I was surfing the top three search engines, my GeoCities homepages about Pandan, Antique such as geocities.com/gopandan, geocities.com/pandanantique, and geocities.com/pandan_antique still appeared at the SERPs.

Today, I again checked Google, Yahoo! and Bing search engines, and all them updated its search engines results pages. But Bing search engine is probably not done yet cleaning its SERP regarding GeoCities pages. There are still remaining GeoCities homepages in its SERP as of this writing such as geocities.com/pandanantique and my personal homepage geocities.com/sofiehofmann.

But I am sure that in just a few days or a few hours or maybe in just a few minutes, Bing will notice its SERP, and the GeoCities pages will be removed right away from the search engine results page (SERP) of Bing.

That is of course an assumption. We will see if Bing is fast enough to notice its own SERP. 🙂

GeoCities has finally closed

GeoCities has finally closed on Monday, October 26, 2009. My five homepages with GeoCities could not be accessed anymore after ten long years of being hosted free at Yahoo! GeoCities. It was with GeoCities where I took my first interest in web design. GeoCities has been my training ground regarding coding in HTML until I finally moved on that there was more beyond HTML in web designing.

The five homepages were still accessible on Monday until the last few minutes of the day. I tried redirecting the homepages to the new websites but it was only functional until that Monday. When I checked the homepages today, I just got a message:

Sorry, the GeoCities web site you were trying to reach is no longer available.

GeoCities has closed, but there’s a lot more to explore on Yahoo!

Despite owning several domain names already related to those old homepages, I chose to maintain all my homepages with GeoCities. Those homepages ranked high at the search engine result pages. It would have been a pity to just ditch them. I have invested a lot of time on those homepages but GeoCities made a decision to close them down for me. 🙂

I did not transfer those homepages as I have recreated them using my own domain names a long time ago. The websites with my own domain names were not copies of the homepages but somehow some of the contents are related to the old homepages.

It is really a pity that GeoCities has to close down its free web hosting.

I was just thinking though, what if Yahoo! converted GeoCities into a blogging service like Blogger and allow the owners to publish advertisements using YPN (Yahoo! Publisher Network) instead of Google AdSense?

I know for a fact that Yahoo! put ads on the homepages hosted free at GeoCities some time ago but it was not for the benefit of the owners of the homepages. GeoCities homepage owners used to monetize their pages too but things have changed along the way.

If Blogger and Google are benefiting from their own services, why not Yahoo! benefiting from GeoCities as a blogging platform and YPN for publishing ads.

Well, probably Yahoo! did not want to invest into such as Yahoo! itself is using WordPress for their blogs instead of creating their own blogging software. I really do not know the real financial situation of Yahoo! and it is too late for me to say these things as Yahoo! closed GeoCities already.

Anyway, I had a lot of fun with GeoCities while it lasted.

Thank you, Yahoo! GeoCities for the ten-year free web hosting services!

Yahoo! Geocities Web Designs

Yahoo! announced last week that it will be closing GeoCities later this year after 10 long years of providing free web hosting. Yahoo! GeoCities is no longer allowing new customers to sign up for GeoCities accounts. Yahoo! GeoCities will provide more details about its closing and how to save your site data, if you have any, this summer. More information is available at Yahoo! Help Center.

It was with Yahoo! GeoCities when I first experimented designing websites. I created my first homepage in 1999 with GeoCities which was just acquired by Yahoo! then. I remember having that long url and I was never able to memorize it. Despite that, I created four more homepages for different purposes.

Pandan Antique HomePage

The five homepages that I created with Yahoo! GeoCities are still existing. They will exist until Yahoo! GeoCities closes down all GeoCities accounts and websites later this year. I still maintain the websites at Yahoo! GeoCities but I have not been updating them for quite a long time since I bought my own domain names. I already have removed some of the pages and redirected them to the new domain names. Some of the pages, instead of redirecting them, I just put a note about the new domain name.

Pandan Antique Information Site Pandan Antique Lawa

I actually just maintain the websites as they rank high at Google if you search using the keywords “pandan antique”. It used to rank high with the keyword “pandan” but ever since I stopped updating them, the rank at Google also changed. You will still see those homepages only at the second page and once in a while at the first page if you search Google using the keyword “pandan”. But if the keywords are “pandan antique” they are still on top of the first page.

A World of Inspirations Sofies Creations

I have not included my Yahoo! GeoCities free-hosted homepages in this site but when I heard that Yahoo! GeoCities will be closing, I might as well include them here and just put a note later that they are offline once they are not viewable anymore. They are very simple and all were designed using HTML. Remember, its free-hosting at Yahoo! GeoCities. 🙂

Yahoo! Messenger Update, Security Update

I was supposed to write about this Security Update of Yahoo! Messenger for Windows but I was busy as usual. It was available on June 08, 2007 but never got the time to blog about it. Maybe it’s late, but for those of you who doesn’t know yet, it is recommended to update your Yahoo! Messenger.

This is from the blog entry at Yahoo! Messenger Blog, Security Update:

You can check which version you have by clicking the ‘Help’ menu option, at the top right of your Yahoo! Messenger window, and then clicking ‘About Yahoo! Messenger’. If the Yahoo! Messenger version number is 8.1.0.401 (or higher) then you have the latest and do not need to take any immediate action. If you are running anything lower than 8.1.0.401 then please upgrade to the latest version.

I suggest, if you would like to be updated all the time about Yahoo! Messenger, read Yahoo! Messenger Blog.

I have been using Yahoo! Messenger to communicate with friends and especially with my family in the Philippines. I also use Skype, but what I like about Yahoo! Messenger, you can leave offline messages to your family and friends and they will get them once they’re online even if you are offline. If you know their mobile phone number/s, you may even send them SMS for free (but with some limitations).

Yahoo! Messenger has a lot of features that I like but the conferencing feature needs more improvement. It’s good if there are only two persons talking but if three people are talking, it cannot handle it. This is where Skype is good but one thing though, Skype videocam feature is not available during conferencing.

I just mentioned it, so you know, but to discuss the features of Yahoo! Messenger and Skype, as well as MSN Live Messenger, among others, is another topic. I hope, I will eventually be able to blog about it. One of these days… 🙂

Yahoo! Video, Google Video, YouTube, Grouper

Have you been vlogging? Did you think I made a mistake in spelling that out? Nah! Vlogging stands for video blogging! Vlogging is quite common now a days. You have a lot choices if you want to vlog, for example, Yahoo! Video, Google Video, YouTube and Grouper.

On May 31, 2006, according to Yahoo! search blog, Yahoo! rolled out the new Yahoo! Video, an upgrade from its video search service that introduces more ways to find and share video programming. Now, it includes the ability to upload your videos directly to Yahoo! at Yahoo! Video. Read more at Yahoo! Video team blog.

On October 31, 2005, according to Google, its Google Video was growing so fast that they thought a blog is the best way to showcase some of the great videos that catch their attention. Read more at Google VideoBlog or at the Google Video Discussion Board.

Founded in February 2005, YouTube is probably the most popular one, but Grouper is also becoming known as it is the one which was first introduced at Friendster if you want to upload as well as watch a video in your Friendster account. Lately, Friendster added YouTube too if you want to view a video from Friendster. YouTube originally started as a personal video sharing service, and has grown into an entertainment destination with people watching more than 70 million videos on the site daily. Check out YouTube Blog to keep up to date on all the latest YouTube developments.

Grouper started in 2004 as a Microsoft Windows based application that allowed users to share their personal media within private groups but with the release of the 2.0 version of the Grouper client in December 2005, the focus was refined to sharing video over the web. Read more about Grouper at Wikipedia and Grouper Networks Blog.

I tried uploading a video at Grouper but I deleted it. I used Yahoo! Video and Google Video if I want to feature my own videos in my blogs. I feature videos from YouTube once in a while. I use all of them just to see the difference between these video sharing services.

Of course, each has the features play, stop and volume. What are the other features if the video is being featured from your website? See these pages, Swimming Competition 2006 Announcement (Google Video) and Storm in Weggis (Yahoo! Video) at Weggis.net and Travel to the Philippines (YouTube) at SofieHofmann.com. See and try to compare them.

Let us say, you featured the videos from your blog or website, the size of Yahoo! Video and YouTube is the same, the width is 425 and the height is 350 while Google Video has 400 in width and 326 in height. They will accept videos of any length and size but they will be resized. Naturally if the width of the main column of your blog is less than 425, you might want to consider using Google Video instead of Yahoo! Video or YouTube. You have to consider that if you have a side menu instead of a top menu in your blog, then using YouTube and Yahoo! Video may destroy the look of your blog. You have the option though of just linking the video from your blog instead of featuring it.

If you want to view the video in its original size from your blog, you can do it with Yahoo! Video unlike Google and YouTube, there’s none, only from the main site of Google and YouTube. Google can be viewed in its original size, double size, fit to window, full screen, only if you manipulate it from the main site of Google Video. Whatever you specified from the main Google Video site, that’s the size that will appear on your blog.

If you want to go the main site of each one, Yahoo! Video has a link after you view the video unlike YouTube, once you click the whole screen, you will be automatically redirected to the main site of YouTube. Google Video has a link at the bottom right, but you need to click the logo first and once you see “Go to Google Video”, then you can go to the main site if you click it.

If you want to share the video to your friends directly from the site where the video was featured, YouTube has a share feature through email, and Yahoo! Video can be shared through IM and email. Google Video can be shared from the main Google Video site just like YouTube and Yahoo! Video.

With regards to the time, if the viewer wants to know how long is the video, you will not see it at Yahoo! Video unlike Google Video and YouTube. The viewer will only know how long is the Yahoo! Video after the viewer finished watching the video. But of course, if you are the one who featured the site, you already have an idea how long is the video because it is specified at the main sites of Yahoo! Video, Google Video, YouTube and Grouper, wherever you took the video that you would like to be featured in your site.

How big should the file be? With Google Video, you can upload videos as many as you like even more than 100MB. There are different ways though in uploading videos less than 100MB and more than 100MB. Read “How do I upload videos?” with Google Video. You can upload videos as many as you want with Yahoo! Video but each file needs to be less than 100MB. YouTube has a limit of 100MB and 10 minutes in length per video but there is no length limit for Director accounts.

In what format should the video be? Google Video accept many popular formats, such as AVI, ASF, QuickTime, Windows Media and MPEG formats. Files with file extensions like .avi, .asf, .mov, .wmv, .mpg, .mpeg, .mp4, .ra, .ram, and .mod are all acceptable but currently do not accept Flash files. Read Google Video’s technical requirements and quality guidelines for more information. Yahoo! Video supports the following file types like Windows Media, ASF, QuickTime, MPEG-1 and MPEG-2. YouTube accepts video files in the .avi, .mov, and .mpg file formats. I uploaded a .wmv at YouTube and it was accepted too.

What if you want to keep your video a private one? Yes, you have the option to keep it private or make it available to the public, check it out once you uploaded the video.

Ok, it’s getting long, enough for today. Anyway, these are just some of the features that I would like to mention. If you think that what I didn’t write here are good to mention too, you can write them here. You’re all welcome to do that. Read their FAQs or Help section too. Well, until then and have fun vlogging! Have fun viewing the videos!

Yahoo! Messenger Update

This is an update. I uninstalled the new version of Yahoo! Messenger with Voice just to find out, if what I really wrote last night about Yahoo! Messenger, XHTML, PHP, WordPress, YM, Yahoo! 360, was accurate, having no option not to include the Yahoo! Toolbar and Yahoo! Browser Services during the installation.

I found out that you actually have the option not to include the Yahoo! Toolbar and Yahoo! Browser Services during the installation. I just overlooked it. You can actually choose between “Typical Install” and “Custom Install”.

If you accept the “Typical Install”, Yahoo! Messenger with Voice is not the only one which will be installed but it will also install the Yahoo! Toolbar and Yahoo! Browser Services and you don’t really know what you’re going to have. Well, I saw it and it’s not really bad but I prefer not to have the Yahoo! Toolbar and Yahoo! Browser Services. I also have some apprehension, I don’t know what other softwares have been installed when I used the “Typical Install”. Just a thought!

If you don’t want to use the “Typical Install” you can use “Custom Install” where you are given the option what to install especially if you don’t want the Yahoo! Toolbar and Yahoo! Browser Services.

What if you did what I did, used the “Typical Install”? Then, you just uninstall the Yahoo! Toolbar, the links are in my previous entry. But after I uninstalled the Yahoo! Toolbar, I opted to uninstall the Yahoo! Messenger with Voice for the reason that I already stated above.

If you want to uninstall the Yahoo! Messenger with Voice, well, the process is just like the one on how to uninstall Yahoo! Toolbar, Option 2, by going to the Control Panel.

Instead of writing how to do it, I’d rather give you the links at the Yahoo! Messenger Help.

Uninstalling Yahoo! Messenger

Uninstalling Yahoo! Messenger from Windows

Well, that’s all and again, good luck!

XHTML, PHP, WordPress, YM, Yahoo! 360

Today, I changed the codes of my web design site, Sehdi.com – Sofie Estolloso Hofmann Designs International, from XHTML to PHP. I enhanced the index page with rotating images of my web designs with URL links and added the Latest Blog Posts, and so if you are regularly visiting my site, you will know right away if I updated my blog. I redirected the HTML pages to PHP pages using .htaccess. Then, I upgraded my sehdi.com blog from WordPress 1.5 to WordPress 2.0.3. Everything seems to be working fine.

That’s what good about WordPress, it’s not difficult to understand so you can configure it easily.

Yesterday, I revised the PHP codes of the donation pages of Green Cross Switzerland. I just need the translation of the German version to English, French and Italian languages, then everything will be in place and Green Cross Switzerland will finally be able to receive donations online through its site.

On other matters, Yahoo improved its Yahoo! Messenger with Voice.

According to Yahoo! 360 Team:

Yahoo! Messenger & Yahoo! 360° Working Together

The new version of Yahoo! Messenger has a great new feature called “plug-ins.”

Plug-ins are free, mini-applications that can be easily added to Yahoo! Messenger with Voice so that Messenger becomes more personal and interactive for you.

There’s a Yahoo! 360° plug-in on Messenger that lets you do some pretty cool stuff. You can read updates from your friends, see if you have new blog comments, and even write a blast or a blog entry – all from within Yahoo! Messenger.

Last night, I downloaded and installed the new beta version of Yahoo! Messenger with Voice (BETA) (8.0.0.505) with MyYahoo Module (7.5.0.1).

The new version is ok except for the Yahoo! Toolbar and Yahoo! Browser Services which are no longer optional if you want to install it or not. But you can uninstall the Yahoo! Toolbar if you don’t like it at all. (Updated on June 22, 2006 at 11:49 pm regarding the phrase that I just erased, see my next blog entry)

How do you uninstall it? It’s easy, just locate the “Edit” button, which appears like a pencil, click it and you will see “Uninstall” almost at the bottom. Just click it and the Yahoo! Toolbar is gone.

For more information, read the following at the Yahoo! Toolbar Help.

How do I remove Yahoo! Toolbar for Internet Explorer?

How do I remove Yahoo! Toolbar for Mozilla Firefox?

If you decide to install the new version of Yahoo! Messenger with Voice but don’t want the Yahoo! Toolbar, you just uninstall the toolbar after installing the new YM beta version.

That’s all and good luck!
