Upgraded to WordPress 5.7 “Esperanza”

I finished upgrading all the nineteen (19) Websites and blogs that I maintain using WordPress as a CMS (Content Management System) and as a blog publishing platform to WordPress 5.7 “Esperanza”.

During the upgrade, I encountered a few problems. Before and after the upgrade, I would check “Site Health Status” of the site and then try to resolve the problems.

I encountered a problem regarding HTTPS on one of the Websites but was able to resolve it by temporarily changing the theme of that particular Website which I intend to redesign later.

I also encountered a problem regarding PHP version but resolved it too by upgrading to PHP 7.4 as recommended.

Another problem was, the authorisation header was missing according to “Site Health”. I simply flushed the permalinks as indicated below the message.

When flushing permalinks did not work, I just checked the file “.htaccess” and looked if the new line below was added between “RewriteEngine On” and “RewriteBase /”. If it was not added, I just added it.

RewriteRule .* - [E=HTTP_AUTHORIZATION:%{HTTP:Authorization}]

Old WordPress .htaccess codes

# BEGIN WordPress
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^index\.php$ - [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /index.php [L]
</IfModule>

New WordPress .htaccess codes

# BEGIN WordPress
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule .* - [E=HTTP_AUTHORIZATION:%{HTTP:Authorization}]
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^index\.php$ - [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /index.php [L]
</IfModule>

There were a few more minor problems but they can be ignored for a while. I will resolve them as soon as possible.

I did not check the new features of WordPress 5.7 “Esperanza”. I just would like to upgrade to the new version, just for the reason of upgrading all the Websites and blogs.

If you like the new features of WordPress 5.7 “Esperanza”, upgrade now but do not forget, backup your databases and files first before upgrading your blogs and sites.

By the way, if you noticed, I have no post regarding WordPress 5.6 “Simone”. It takes time to upgrade all the Websites and blogs as I maintain quite a few, so I intentionally skipped upgrading to WordPress 5.6 “Simone”.

Responsive Minimalist One-Column WordPress Theme for Sehdi.com

I finished the new responsive minimalist one-column WordPress theme for SEHDI.com | Sofie Estolloso Hofmann Designs International. I revised the web design for several days but in non-consecutive days.

I have been trying to work on it for quite a long time already but I always ended up not finishing what I started.

It was on December 22, 2019, when I finally began converting the Fluid Two-Column WordPress Theme for Sehdi.com into a responsive minimalist theme but was not able to finish it again.

I continued revising the web design on January 03-04, 2020, but did not upload the theme as it was not completely done yet.

Finally, I finished the new WordPress theme for Sehdi.com on September 04-05, 2020. I uploaded the responsive minimalist one-column WordPress theme but that was after I upgraded the WordPress software to WordPress 5.5 “Eckstine” and WordPress 5.5.1 Maintenance Release.

This Sehdi.com version five has only one column. It is almost the same with Sehdi.com version four except for the comment section and sidebar which I totally removed.

As the sidebar on the right side had been removed, I made the header, content, and footer centered, so it would look better on mobile phones other than desktops and laptops.

I deleted a few codes at the PHP pages that were not necessary anymore aside from just tweaking the CSS or the cascading style sheets.

I then made a few minor changes on October 09-10, 2020, just to clean the codes and polish the new theme.

I again uploaded the new theme on October 12, 2020. I then checked if there were errors online by looking at the page source with the Web Inspector.

For some reason, there were errors regarding the embedded link codes at the content especially the codes for WordPress 4.4 “Clifford”, WordPress 3.5 “Elvin”, WordPress 3.4 “Green”, and WordPress 3.3 “Sonny” videos.

The VideoPress links have been changed, so I updated the embedded video links at the content section. Unfortunately, the errors still occurred.

I might be wrong but as I see it, VideoPress needs to do something about those errors as they were beyond my control.

There might be some more errors on my past posts but I did not check anymore. If those errors persist, I might remove the embedded videos later.

Upgraded to WordPress 5.5 “Eckstine” and WordPress 5.5.1

I finished upgrading all the remaining seventeen (17) Websites and blogs that I maintain using WordPress as a CMS (Content Management System) and as a blog publishing platform to WordPress 5.5 “Eckstine”, and then to WordPress 5.5.1 which is a maintenance release.

After I upgraded to WordPress 5.5 “Eckstine”, my web design Website SEHDI.com | Sofie Estolloso Hofmann Designs International, and my personal Website and blog SofieHofmann.com | Simple Happiness, I took a break as it was already scheduled.

I started upgrading again the other Websites and blogs on September 21, 2020, but not everyday though.

Yesterday, I finally finished upgrading or updating the other Websites and blogs.

I did not have any difficulty. Everything went smooth. There were no errors.

It just took so long as I needed to backup the databases and files first before the upgrade.

If you have not upgraded yet, upgrade now but do not forget, backup your databases and files first before upgrading to WordPress 5.5 “Eckstine” or WordPress 5.5.1 Maintenance Release.

Now that all the Websites and blogs have been upgraded, I will start redesigning the current web designs into minimalist responsive one-column themes based on the new web designs of Sehdi.com and SofieHofmann.com Websites.

Upgraded to WordPress 5.5 “Eckstine”

I finished upgrading my two (2) Websites, namely, SEHDI.com | Sofie Estolloso Hofmann Designs International, my web design Website, and SofieHofmann.com | Simple Happiness, my personal Website and blog, using WordPress as a CMS (Content Management System) as well as a blog publishing platform from WordPress 5.0.10 and WordPress 5.0.8 respectively to WordPress 5.5 “Eckstine” version and WordPress 5.5.1 maintenance release.

It took sometime again before I upgraded the Websites. I was not able to upgrade the Websites to WordPress 5.1 “Betty”, WordPress 5.2 “Jaco”, WordPress 5.3 “Kirk”, and WordPress 5.4 Adderley after WordPress 5.0 until last Friday and Saturday, which I finally upgraded to WordPress 5.5, and eventually to WordPress 5.5.1 version.

I did not have any problem as I have redesigned the two (2) Websites. I redesigned Sehdi.com from a fluid two-column theme into a minimalist responsive one-column theme. I revised SofieHofmann.com, also from a fluid two-column theme into a responsive one-column theme based on the old web design.

I backed up the databases first, then secured the files and copies of the themes before uploading the new themes via FTP or File Transfer Protocol. I updated the blogs and Websites using the One-Click Automatic Upgrade at WordPress Admin Dashboard. I only activated the new web designs after I updated to WordPress 5.5 version.

I still have to upgrade the other Websites and blogs, and at the same time would have to redesign the current web designs into minimalist responsive one-column themes based on the new web designs of Sehdi.com and SofieHofmann.com Websites.

WordPress 5.5 “Eckstine” has new features again. Read about them at WordPress 5.5 “Eckstine” news entry at the WordPress Website. WordPress 5.5.1 Maintenance Release has been released as well featuring several bug fixes and enhancements.

Well then, if you have not upgraded yet, upgrade now. Make sure though to backup your databases and save your files and themes before you do anything.

Thank you again, WordPress Team.

Upgraded to WordPress 5.0 “Bebo”

I finished upgrading all the blogs and Websites using WordPress as a blog publishing platform as well as CMS (Content Management System) from WordPress 4.7 “Vaughan” to WordPress 5.0 “Bebo”, then WordPress 5.0.1 on December 09, 2018 to December 19, 2018 just before WordPress 5.0.2 maintenance release was out on December 19, 2018.

It took me sometime to finish upgrading all the nineteen (19) blogs and Websites as I needed to backup the databases and save the files first before upgrading them.

After I backed up the databases and saved the files and themes, I updated the blogs and Websites using the One-Click Automatic Upgrade at WordPress Admin Dashboard.

So far, it was a smooth upgrade considering that I was not able to upgrade the Websites and blogs from WordPress 4.7 “Vaughan” to WordPress 4.8 “Evans” and WordPress 4.9 “Tipton” versions.

Below is the video of the WordPress 5.0 “Bebo” with its new features especially the big upgrades to the editor.

Just a reminder, backup your databases and save your files and themes before you upgrade or every time you upgrade.

Thank you again, WordPress Team!

Upgraded to WordPress 4.7 “Vaughan”

I finished upgrading all the blogs and sites using WordPress as a blog publishing platform as well as CMS (Content Management System) from WordPress 4.6 and WordPress 4.6.3 to WordPress 4.7 after WordPress 4.7.2 was released but before WordPress 4.7.3 was released. I was not just able to write about it immediately.

I did not like to just upgrade to WordPress 4.7.2 right away so I downloaded WordPress 4.7 first which can be found at WordPress Release Archive. Then I uploaded all the files via FTP (File Transfer Protocol) before upgrading to WordPress 4.7.2 using the One-Click Automatic Upgrade at WordPress Admin Dashboard.

It took me sometime to finish upgrading all the 18 blogs and sites because I needed to backup the databases before upgrading everything. I did not save the theme files anymore since I have not made any changes to the themes anyway.

It would have been easier to update all the blogs and sites via the WordPress Admin Dashboard but I always would like to do the major upgrade by myself.

I did not encounter any serious problems upgrading to WordPress 4.7 "Vaughan". Everything went smoothly.

Below is the video of WordPress 4.7 "Vaughan" with its new features.

If you have not upgraded yet, better update your blogs and sites now. The latest release is WordPress 4.7.3 which is a maintenance and security release for all the previous versions. Please read WordPress 4.7.3 Security and Maintenance Release to know more about the new version and why you should update your sites and blogs immediately.

Before you upgrade though or every time you upgrade, make sure to backup your database and files.

Thank you again, WordPress Team!

Upgraded to WordPress 4.6 “Pepper”

I finished upgrading all the blogs and sites using WordPress as a blog publishing platform as well as CMS (Content Management System) from WordPress 4.4.2 Security and Maintenance Release and WordPress 4.4.5 to WordPress 4.6 and WordPress 4.6.1.

I was not able to upgrade to WordPress 4.5 so I just upgraded to WordPress 4.6 before upgrading to WordPress 4.6.1.

I did not like to just upgrade to WordPress 4.6.1 right away so I downloaded WordPress 4.6 first which can be found at WordPress Release Archive. Then I uploaded all the files via FTP (File Transfer Protocol) before upgrading to WordPress 4.6.1 using the One-Click Automatic Upgrade at WordPress Admin Dashboard.

It took me sometime to finish upgrading all the 18 blogs and sites because I needed to save all the theme files and backup the databases before upgrading everything.

It would have been easier to update all the blogs and sites via the WordPress Admin Dashboard but I would like to see all the new features with WordPress 4.6 even if it would still be the same with WordPress 4.6.1 anyway.

I did not encounter any problems upgrading to WordPress 4.6 “Pepper” despite not upgrading to WordPress 4.5 “Coleman” after a WordPress 4.4 “Clifford” update. Everything went smoothly.

Below is the video of WordPress 4.6 “Pepper” with its new features.

If you have not upgraded yet, better update your blogs and sites now. The latest release is WordPress 4.6.1 which is a maintenance and security release for all the previous versions. Please read WordPress 4.6.1 Security and Maintenance Release to know more about the new version and why you should update your sites and blogs immediately.

Bear in mind though that before you upgrade or every time you upgrade, make sure to backup your database and files.

Thank you again, WordPress Team!

Upgraded to WordPress 4.4 “Clifford”

Hello everyone! I would like to say, “Happy New Year”, since it is still January of 2016.

After three (3) years, here I am again, updating this blog. I do not like to say that I neglected this blog. It so happen that I changed my focus and other personal things got in the way.

I finished upgrading this Website last week but did not write about it immediately. I am using WordPress as a blog publishing platform as well as a CMS or Content Management System on this Website, and other sites and blogs.

It has been a long time since I upgraded this Website. You can just imagine how long has it been since I just upgraded it last week from WordPress 3.5 “Elvin” to WordPress 4.4 “Clifford”.

Considering that it has been that long since the last blog update and WordPress upgrade when I upgraded to WordPress 3.5 “Elvin”, I thought that I would encounter a lot of problems upgrading this Website. I was fortunate enough that I did not have any problems at all upgrading it.

Upgrading this Website from WordPress 3.5 “Elvin” to WordPress 4.4 “Clifford” went smoothly.

Below is the video of WordPress 4.4 “Clifford” with its new features.

You can download the new WordPress 4.4 version from WordPress.org Website but then WordPress has already a new security release, WordPress 4.4.1, which fixes the cross-site scripting vulnerability that could allow a site to be compromised. It also fixes other non-security bugs from the 4.4 version.

Always remember though, before upgrading to the new the version, please backup your database and files.

Thank you so much again, WordPress Team!

Upgraded to WordPress 3.5 “Elvin”

I was supposed to write about Jetpack after upgrading to WordPress 3.4.2 but as I was learning more about it, WordPress released the new WordPress 3.5 “Elvin” version on December 11, 2012.

So, instead of writing about Jetpack especially since I am still discovering it, I updated first the Websites including blogs using WordPress.

I will have to delay writing about Jetpack until I have learned more about it, not only about its features like Sharing and Post by Email because Jetpack has a lot of features other than the two I mentioned.

Anyway, I finished upgrading today the twenty (20) Websites including blogs using WordPress as a blog publishing platform as well as a CMS or Content Management System.

It took some time again as I did not upgrade them all at the same day. As usual, it was because of my own process of upgrading the sites and blogs.

Well, I did not encounter any problems. Upgrading the sites and blogs from WordPress 3.4.2 to WordPress 3.5 “Elvin” went smoothly just like when I upgraded to WordPress 3.4.2 from WordPress 3.4.1.

Below is the video of WordPress 3.5 “Elvin” at a glance.

You can download the new WordPress release from WordPress.org Website.

Remember, before upgrading to the new the version, please backup your database and files.

Thank you again, WordPress Team!

Upgraded to WordPress 3.4.2

WordPress 3.4.2 was released on September 6, 2012 but it was only last week that I finished upgrading the sites and blogs that I maintain using WordPress as a blog publishing platform as well as a CMS or Content Management System. Finally!

Actually, updating to the new release of WordPress is quite easy. It would probably only take you a minute to do it. But with me, it is not the case. I have my own process and updating one site to a new version would take me 15-30 minutes. Even if it would only take me 15-30 minutes to update one website or blog at a time, it still took me so long to update the sites.

Every time I update, I would test each site or blog first in my local installation. If everything is fine, I would login at each of my phpmyadmin installation online and backup the database. I would use FTP or File Transfer Protocol to backup the other files. I make sure that I have everything before updating one site at a time online. If anything happens, it would not give me any headache solving a problem. After backing up everything I would probably need, I would login to my site online, one at a time, and then update to the new release.

I upgraded twenty (20) websites including blogs from WordPress 3.4.1 while the other three (3) websites were upgraded from WordPress 3.3.1. Everything went fine. I thought I will not be able to upgrade the remaining three (3) sites that I was not able to upgrade before when I upgraded the sites and blogs from WordPress 3.3.1 to WordPress 3.4.1, but upgrading them to WordPress 3.4.2 went fine too.

Remember when I was telling you about the problem with the period or dot I used instead of having the category blank or empty at this blog entry, Upgraded to WordPress 3.0 “Thelonious”? Well, that problem was solved. It was also solved when I upgraded to WordPress 3.3.1 but somehow the problem occurred again when I upgraded to WordPress 3.4.1. When I tested the sites with WordPress 3.4.1, the problem occurred with my local installation. That was what I thought so.

The sites may have worked well if I updated the database. But I normally update the database. But then again, I could not remember if I updated the database or not at my local installation. So now, I could not possibly tell you if the problem could really have been solved already when I upgraded to WordPress 3.4.1.

Nevertheless, everything went fine with WordPress 3.4.2. At first, the sites did not work well at my local installation. So I decided to revise at least three (3) files at one of the themes that I used. I especially created a new folder for the revised theme so the old theme will still be fine even before activating the new one. Then, I upgraded one (1) of the online sites to WordPress 3.4.2 without activating the revised theme yet.

I was surprised when I checked the pages online because everything was fine. I did not see the 404 Not Found page which I normally got with my local installation. Well then, there was no need to change the theme after all. With that, I upgraded the other two (2) sites and everything went fine as well.

If you decide to upgrade your site or blog to WordPress 3.4.2, please do not forget to backup your database and files.

Another thing, after I upgraded the websites and blogs, I decided to install the Jetpack plugin. Yes, I have not installed this plugin when it was released. But now, I installed it as I would like to update the WordPress Stats plugin.

Jetpack by WordPress.com is certainly very useful. I tested one of its features which is Post By Email. It works well, better than the built-in feature Post via e-mail. With Jetpack, there is not that much to configure. You just enable Post By Email at the User’s Profile.

More about Jetpack on my next blog entry. 🙂

By the way, according to WordPress.org, “WordPress 3.4.2, now available for download, is a maintenance and security release for all previous versions.” It fixed a lot of bugs found at the older WordPress releases.

Thank you, WordPress Team!
